Stories, My House Tonight, Great Mood Highlight the CD

by Brennig Jones

‘Satin Soldiers’, the first track on Great Mood for a Tuesday by Felicia Finley delivers an introduction capable of inducing breathless anticipation; it conveys an awesome, hooky promise of much musical excellence to follow and it delivers these things effortlessly. The musicianship on ‘Satin Soldiers’ is exemplary, the writing is far above the average and the backing vocals play their part beautifully.

Track two – ‘Stories’ – is just about perfect. The listener has the same above average perfect blend of top writing, excellent performance and brilliant production signposted by a sweet intro, and the lead vocal layers the whole thing to the same standards and it’s a joy to listen to. ‘Stories’ has the feel of a classic power ballad. We all have our favourites in that genre and there’s no reason why ‘Stories’ can’t join that list! It really is excellent.

Also getting the ‘excellent’ label is ‘My House Tonight’. This is a deliciously upbeat delivery which accompanies a rockingly brilliant performance from Felicia. Once again the weaving of the parts that support the lead vocal are all exemplary! But Felicia’s voice and delivery just adds an extra quality to ‘My House Tonight’ that carries this delightful song along with a real lick. It’s impossible not to tap, bop and dip along to this one!

And there’s more gold on the album.

The title track, ‘Great Mood for a Tuesday’ is a real genre-switch to a more laid-back place, to somewhere where the listener can let the performance wash over them right from the Dylanesque six-string intro that beautifully accompanies a lovely vocal performance from Felicia. And then at 1m 47s the track picks up its skirts, grows a new backbone and propels the listener to a whole new place. This is brilliant! This has depth and feeling and frankly, it is a really excellent performance good enough for anyone’s ears.

‘Closin’ Time’ is a track with broad appeal, easy to listen to, easy to understand, a good soundtrack to your day track; highly pleasurable for any user experience.

‘Tired of Losing Sleep’ (how can you not love that title?) is beautiful, anthemic, works its way beneath the listener’s skin like an allergy and stays there while you rub at it again and again and again.

Summary
This album kicks off with one of the best instrumental introductions I’ve ever heard, There’s a big musical rally in track 2 and ‘Stories’ makes it all good. So does ‘My House Tonight’. ‘Great Mood for a Tuesday’ is the icing on the cake. So is ‘Closing Time’. Even more icing on the cake comes from the brilliantly performed ‘Tired of Losing Sleep’.

Felicia Finley has a good team behind her and when the conditions are right she can lay down a set of vocals to complement and build upon anything they’re capable of performing.

Because of Felicia’s past work experience on the stage, her diction is a pure pleasure to listen to. She projects her voice whilst keeping her core speaking accent. Any listener can understand every word of this performance. There are many performers who could learn from this.
